Eastern Africa:
EAST
AFRICA—While driving down the desolate and sandy tracks
of a rural area of East Africa, Baptist representatives found
themselves asking, “What's it going to take to reach
this people?”
This
rural area is home to several thousand inhabitants who are
an unreached nomadic people. They are barely able to make
a meager living by herding goats
and cattle and selling the milk from the animals in the local
markets.
The
nearest paved road is several miles away and a town of significant
size is even further.
It
was shocking to learn that the only source of water for the
people and for their animals was water found in dammed water
catchments or in much smaller underground reservoirs filled
by infrequent and very often inadequate rains.
They
realized that the immediate answer to the question, “What's
it going to take?” was “WATER!”
It
was out of this insight that the “Water of Life”
project was born. The project, which is still in the planning
stages, will provide wells with clean water for these nomads.
This will greatly improve the health of the people, supplying
water the most basic needs of their families as well as their
livestock. Those involved in the project hope that prayers,
giving, and the willingness to travel down desolate paths
to offer a cup of water in Jesus' name will one day lead these
people to drink from the true Water of life.
