Many refugee children are uneducated

The Millat camp is one of several refugee camps in the capital city of Bangladesh that continues to be home to Bihari Muslims even decades after the war of independence. At this camp, only 16.2 percent of the children do not have a job or are not involved in some kind of income-generating activity, according to a nongovernmental organization’s findings. “Schooling programs have largely failed to reach the children,” the report says. “Parents fear their children will get spoiled and prefer work discipline to school. In the upbringing of a son, better results are expected from a factory owner than from a teacher.” Only 13 percent of the children between ages 5 and 15 attend school, the report shows.
